My road to Arm Chair Generalship
My road to Arm Chair Generals “Real-Time Strategy Games”
Experience Intro

Since the advent of computers the possibilities became unlimited. And computer games have been a great part of it and a certified hit. Today computer games is a million dollar industry. One particular genre of computer games, that I’ve been hook at is real time strategy games (RTS). Players like me are hook to these gaming format are often called “Arm Chair Generals”. But digital games back then weren’t really as sophisticated as it is now.
Here’s my Story
The first digital game I came across with, while growing up during the 80’s was “Game and Watch” It was a small packet size digital contraption that always was a crowd magnet
young as I was then I think it was cool thing next to action figures. My personal favorite was the game “Submarine”. the rules of the game was simple. Destroy every thing that comes in your way, from surface ships, Plane and subs. It was fun
Though highly mobile, It does have one obvious drawback. When you buys a unit your stuck with, as people get bored playing the same game over and over again. I know, I would
Good thing digital gaming technologies evolves faster that Darwin’s theory of “nonsense” evolution. And the humble game and watch was destine to be a stone age classic. A few years after the “game and watch blitz”. the same company “Nintendo” that started everything, released the Nintendo family computer console. And it’s safe to say that the Nintendo family computer console is the Cadillac of computer consoles. It provide the bases for present gaming console like Sony’s play station and Xbox, just to name a few. Anyway, here’s a gaming platform that that player don’t get bored easily. The first time I played it was in a makeshift arcade at a local market.
And the very first game I played was contra, were one or two player get to be Arnold Schwarzenegger and blast to enemy to hell in the comforts of their own seats. But as what you expect from a starter my mortality rate was horrific, it seems that getting killed before I could start shooting the enemy make plenty of good laughs on my expense, good thing it was just a game. It did end the game faster than it should. The next game I played was battle city and like the contra it was a fast “game over” ride on my part.

After an embarrassing public display of “game overs” I vowed to played better next time. At least no game overs in just a few short minutes. That was the first and only time I ever play in an arcade. It would take a year before I could really play full time. When my brother brought home a brand new Nintendo family computer. And me and my other brother play with it. Until our old TV’s picture tube gave up, apparently our old colored tv wasn’t build for digital games I think.

One cool feature of a game console like the Nintendo family computer was its versatility in terms of games as a whole. Unlike game and watch were your virtually stuck playing one game until you get sick of it. With the family computer console, a player can play with other player in varieties of games. I mean, here you have a nice looking white box were you can pop a new game anytime you like. If I get bored with a game I just pop another one and your set to go.
After our good old TV gave up, it was a while before I could play any console games, come to think of it I never held a game console not more than 5 minute since then. Back then my mother forbid us to play the console after tour TV throw in the towel, though eventually the TV got fixed and every body in the family forgot about ever owning a Nintendo family computer and everything went pass oblivion. Reason was by the time our TV gave up my brother got a new home PC. Now here a wonder that change the world. Now, computers has been around since world war 2. It was used to break enemy codes, though not as advance as it is now it did its job pretty will during those days. Its important to note that those days computer were run by tubes and they were big, bulking and occupy entire rooms not to mention the cost of having one is financially disturbing.
And during the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s computers are heavily used by industries, laboratories for research and such, and only a few got could actually used it at home. But with the advent of microprocessor in the 70’s. the likelihood of a home PC was not far, in the early 80’s IBM came with the goods, the first and PC was born. Apparently there was one little problem the operating system was in ms-dos. This, means that you need to be a certified geek to be able to own one. It take a lot of word command to make it do things. Not exactly a cake walk for an average everyday person to do. Apple came up with the solution with graphic user interface for its PC (mac-OS). But it wasn’t until a year latter another more user friendly MS-dos add-on was created. Called “windows” from the company Microsoft.
One may wonder what’s this historical backdrop got to be with me being an arm chair general.
Will, nothing basically
OK! back to my story when a certain PC came to our humble home, My brother who brought it home for my other brother, who at that time was in college (Computer Engineering). Anyway, nobody tough me anything about it, they probably thought the equipment was too sensitive for me to handle, so I learn through trial an error. Obviously it was more of errorS (note the capital “S”) on my part. I can still remember my brothers veins pop out to my amusement.
Gradually I began to learn may way around in few months time. And what’s a High school face with “then” a high tech piece of equipment?

the only thing I can think of was games.
First PC game I came across was a Ms-dos based game called “Gorilla” For a basic game it was a bit amusing. Here we have two gorillas throwing lethal bananas at each other. I think it was a game that makes a short burst of fun and laughter and that’s about it. A few minutes more…

After the boring banana warfare I move into FPS games.
Basically FPS or First Person Shooter is a action pack game, were you as player shoots anything that moves. This type of game give a player the perspective of the character being played virtually a “graphical perspective”. You get to kill all your enemies from all direction from the comfort of your own home without any guilt or eventual side effect(death) from the eventful game of carnage.
Hows that for violence!.
I manage to get my hands on five of these sorts. Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, Duke Nukem and Medal of honor are the five FPS games I manage to get my hands on of which Medal of honor was my favorite. But for some reason I get easily bored with this type of game not to mention a sudden headache from whirling about. It’s like playing air-soft without breaking a sweat. Though I think I like air-soft better but that’s another post.
Enter the RTS game
RTS games or Real Time Strategy games are basically digital “wargames”. A player or more get to build, create and sustain armies. And once a player achieved a favorable amount of everything. Then its rock n roll A player can deploy his/her army for defense or attack an opposing forces who has the same objective.
First RTS game I ever played was Done 2 the original during the mid 90’s and it blew my mind away. From then on I never look at another type of game and 95% of my collection is made up of RTS.
Playing the Game.
RTS games are unlike other type is more on strategy, logistics, and the ability to cope on battlefield situations, the alertness of a player reacting to an opponent’s action and vies virsa, defines your ability to control the battle field in ways basically like chess only bigger RTS are lot more complex.
Since then I’ve been piling up RTS games that I decided to create posts based on my experience playing these stuff.
And This is my road to “Arm Chair Generalship”
